About the Show
Musicking Around is a show that explores music geopolitically, featuring a new genre each week. We remain critical of the term “world music” by discussing the theory and context of each tradition, from Shanghai to Dublin. DJ Take Flight will use an ethnomusicological lens to introduce you to new songs as well as the people who make and listen to them. Examples of topics include: Arab maqam-based music by the likes of Sabah Fakri and Umm Kulthum, religious nationalism in the popular music from Coke Studios Pakistan, the role of choral music in post-Apartheid South Africa, and more!
