I saw Stereolab at First Ave and it was FUCKING AWESOME!!! The show was sold out since the summer and First Ave was utterly packed. They’re currently on their unofficial ~~reunion tour~~, and although the band never formally broke up, they stopped playing music together in 2009. They played together for almost two decades, producing 10 mind-boggling genre-bending full length albums that unite french pop with electronic music, krautrock and loungey funk, truly changing music and becoming one of the first bands deemed “post-rock”. It was uniquely powerful to watch them perform and jam comfortably with one another, interacting calmly with the crowd, as they did for many years.
Seeing Stereolab live was a personal joy for me, as they revolutionized my music taste and have been a go-to for me for many years. Their albums Dots and Loops and Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night have been beside me through joy and sorrow alike! I grinned through their whole set (specifically ecstatic when Lætitia Sadier sang the opening lines of “Brakhage”), until the moment that I got escorted outside by security for sharing a beer with my 20-year-old pal… We listened to the encore from the street corner outside the venue, hands marked with red X’s, and let the giddily droning music alleviate our shame from being kicked out of First Ave.
